DIRECTIONS:
About Quotations: In this paper you will incorporate quotations and will continue to do so in ensuing papers. Study directions below! Study the quotation lecture/examples and the model analysis carefully.
***Note that I do not want you to incorporate whole sentences. I want you to include only the “dazzling phrase” that illustrates your point. Study and emulate the model paper. Major points could be deducted for grammatical errors. Proof carefully—those errors could result in an “F.”
Topic: “Battle Royale,” Ralph Ellison (1st chapter of Ellison’s novel Invisible Man)
Length: Around 500-600 words. No, I don’t count words. Just cover all points and study model!
***Description: Write a coherent paper that analyzes the conflicts in the story. Support your assertions with specific quotes and examples.
***Be sure to follow directions below:
30 Points Paragraph 1: Describe the entire plot in one sentence. Include the author’s name, the title of the story, and the denouement. Don’t use semicolons! Emulate the model! The themes are worth 10 points, so take care.
Then, in around 5 sentences, give the plot summary and identify
1) Major points of escalation,
2) The climax
3) The denouement. Include how the character changes. Remember: the change may simply be a shift in awareness. Hint: the denouement is the character’s final change and usually occurs at the very end of story.
4. End the paragraph with the theme and sub-theme. Study the “Theme” lecture and use correct format—e.g., Ellison implies that . . . . Don’t explain the themes! Study model. Just state them!
70 points Paragraphs 2-3: Identify/analyze the conflicts. In these paragraphs, avoid plot summary—write like I’ve read the story (I have:).
Address conflicts. (People vs nature is not in every story.)
External Conflicts merge with the internal ones, so do not actually state, “An example of people vs people is . . . .” Make your writing more sophisticated and write naturally. Review model story and emulate the model paper! If you take time to do that, it will save you time!
Analyze the protagonist’s psychological struggles and desires. What does he/she want that he/she can’t have? What motivate him/her? Be sure to identify several (2-4) internal conflicts. Give examples/quotes from the text for support. Again, do not state, “An internal conflict is . . . . “
Briefly state the character’s flaw–what prevents him/her from getting what he/she wants. Do state, “The protagonist’s flaw is . . . . “
