Sociological Perspectives of Disability in Higher Education

The purpose of the paper is to review how and in what ways the inclusion of the person with a disability is understood from the sociological perspectives, and to identify the literature gaps in light of inclusive education practices by higher education providers. Notably, the paper critically and comparatively discusses various approaches and perspectives on inclusion regarding students with disabilities. First, the paper explains the definition of inclusion concerning disability. Second, the different approaches and sociological perspectives are discussed to understand the different views on the inclusion of the student’s disability. The later sections discuss the prevailing practices of inclusion in higher education and relevant empirical studies to better understand the influence of current policies on the inclusion of people with a physical disability. Finally, some recommendations for the policy are offered based on the concept of the sociological perspectives.
