Uncovering Pathos

An appeal to pathos means trying to create an emotional response in your audience that’s significant enough to motivate them to act in the way for which you’re advocating. Your book lists four methods commonly used to try to create an emotional response in an audience: the use of concrete language or imagery, the use of specific examples/illustrations, the use of narratives, and the use of metaphors or analogies to try to frame an issue a certain. Because of their brief nature, commercials often live and die by how quickly they can connect with their intended audience. The link below will take you to a commercial for Vim cleaner. Assume this commercial aired to a general television audience. Use the lens of pathos to write a 250-500 word analysis of this commercial. For this analysis, you’ll want to consider questions such as the following:
• What is Vim’s goal for this commercial?
• How is Vim attempting to connect to its audience? (What emotion(s) is it attempting to try to evoke in its audience?
• In what ways are any of the four methods for evoking emotional response listed above present in this commercial?
• Assuming that you are a member of Vim’s intended audience, how successful was Vim’s commercial? Where did it succeed? Where did it fail?
