Overview
Each residency will involve several readings, required and optional. It is important that all students read all required readings and skim through the optional ones. To enable a quality class discussion and ensure strong participation, students will write a critique of the two assigned readings for each module (morning and afternoon). This will take the form of a paragraph discussion that each student will write for each article and be ready to discuss during the Residency. The goal of these three assignments is to describe and critically analyze the assigned scholarly articles. Format
Please organize your overall article critique into a coherent write-up with the following structure (please note that this is merely a suggestive structure and you can use your own personal style):
Overview and Summary of each article (one paragraph each, about half a page each)
Overview (about 1-2 sentences): Please provide an overview of the article’s purpose and main argument and describe the article’s strengths and weaknesses.
Key Findings (3-5 sentences): In this section, please review the article’s key points, analyze the article’s strengths and weaknesses, outline the various theoretical perspectives discussed in the article, and explain the main conclusions.
Assessment (2-4 sentences): In this section, please discuss some of the following issues:
 What are the specific research questions being addressed
 Is there an underlying theory that motivates the article
o Are the authors using data to test a hypothesis; if so, what is the hypothesis
o What kind of data does the author(s) use, and where did they come from
o What concepts are included in the article; of particular importance, note those concepts that are the independent and dependent variables and how they are conceptually defined.
o Does the article make the relationships among any variables explicit or place the variables within a theoretical/conceptual framework; what are the key relationships?
o What gaps or conflicts in knowledge of the problem are identified?Conclusion (about 1-2 sentences): Please present the article’s overall value and describe the article’s key theoretical and practical implications.
