write an essay in which you analyze the underlying assumptions and methods used by the author (or curators). Some questions that you might consider:
What theory/theories of history that we have considered seem to have influenced the author/curator?
Can you see other historical theories that might have been used to address the topic (or to frame it differently)? How might other approaches have changed the book/exhibit?
What do you think of the approach used by the author/curator?
You may use other sources to assist you, but this is not primarily a research assignment. We will discuss the assignment at length in class.
Essays must be submitted in hard copy; electronic files will not be read.
NOTE: This is not a book (or exhibit) review essay, nor a traditional undergraduate research essay. Think about the theoretical underpinnings of the book/exhibit – and remember, those are not always explicitly stated. You will need to be a detective to figure out what has influenced the author/curators and why that particular approach was used.
