Write a letter to a friend or family member explaining the free press controversy taking place across the country, from the president’s accusations of an American press that prints “fake news” and is “enemy of the people” to the response of the U.S. Senate and more than 350 newspapers on August 16th. The purpose of your letter is to persuade your reader to join the public conversation about the important role of freedom of the press in our democracy. To do this you will have to help your reader understand the issue by providing background information about the controversy and the role of the press in the U. S. democracy. You will also want to provide an example – describe a story you are following in the New York Times and other media, a story that must be exposed in the press, so we can know how to solve the problem or vote for the person who will.
